The reviews on A25 are very good but it seems like the other two were higher up in Boston product line. MusicDirect is for the pair Crutchfield looks like $399 each ^^ (edit- yes it is half off, $399 for the pair) The A25 is entry level The other 2 are more mid-level compared to the E60 and VS260 You can always buy the M25 from MusicDirect, for a trial period. ^^ (edit - I would do the Crutchfield 60 day trial). Of the three in question, I've only heard the RS260s - I bought a used pair for my girlfriend to replace some older Boston CR8's that she had. Of course, before I gave them her ( edited) the RS260s, I checked them out for myself for a few days. Overall, they're a pretty warm, forgiving speaker, with a definite de-emphasis of the upper-mids to low treble, and not really what I would call neutral. So that may be your thing or it may not be.
The bass is actually pretty good for a speaker of that price and size - I liked the bass on them slightly better than the bass on Monitor Audio RX1s, for example. It's fairly clean and balanced.
Not as good as the Ascend Sierra 1's I have, but pretty good. The vocal range had a touch of lack of clarity, but that was very subtle and only really noticeable when I compared them with.really. nice speakers, like my PSB Synchrony Ones or the Ascend Sierra 1's. The upper mids to low treble (say 1-5kHz?), where many speakers are bright and/or forward, the 260s were really laid back. I remember one poster saying they sounded like that had a blanket over them.
Compared to the other speakers I have, they are definitely warm/dark/mellow in that range. The detail is there but isn't in your face - at all. This is the area where they stray from neutrality. The one good part about this is that harsh recordings become more listenable, and you can also crank them pretty loud without them getting harsh or too in-your-face. But some might find them way too dark/warm/mellow. The high treble seems to come back to the levels of the bass (meaning their frequency response seems to have a big dip in the 1-5kHz range, then comes back up).
I thought the treble seemed fine, and I didn't notice anything really off there, no shrillness or harshness that I noticed. I wish I could have compared them with the A26 and M250, but I haven't heard either of those. Originally Posted by beaveav I found another measurement of them from a Russian (?) that shows a very similar curve but with a more pronounced dip (probably because they measured at a different axis and/or didn't do spatial averaging the same way): Thanks for the link - some interesting measurements, even for some other speakers. I tend to be more comfortable with HT Labs Boston even puts more effort in their higher end speakers - I own the E60 and they are really nice - solid measurements from 200 hz to 10 khz The E60's listening-window response measures +1.25/–0.97 dB from 200 Hz to 10 kHz. The –3-dB point is at 65 Hz, and the –6-dB point is at 53 Hz. Impedance reaches a minimum of 4.36 ohms at 203 Hz and a phase angle of –58.73 degrees at 111 Hz. I bid on pair of A26s.
Another bidder just a dollar or two more than me. I wasn't paying close enough attention. I really have a boatload of speakers to audition here already.
The class of the bunch so far is NHT Classic Three. But I also bought a set of Marimbas. Nice cheap will end up on my desktop. I am running some Usher S520s right now and ordered a refurbed pair of Definitive SM45s for $219 shipped.
I also bought an older pair of Boston CR9s but I think there might be something wrong with one of them. On first blush they did not sound refined at all. I ended up with a CRC7 center but did not realize that was not a match.
It is like new and I only have maybe $60 dollars in that. Any take on which is the best matching bookshelf for that center. I have seen some praise for the CR67. The Ushers sound nice in many ways and the cabinets are quite solid but not quite at the NHT Classic 3 level. I saw a pair of E40s out there. But I wonder how they compare to the E60.
The pricing is significant lower than the only E60s that seem available. I need to work through all of the above and I keep reading about the JBL Studio 530 which reviews make sound like it is much more hi-fi then these others I have here VR monitorsseem to pop up all over and it is funny because so many of these reviews on many of the Boston speakers we have talked about in recent post are called shrill. That is especially what I read on the VR monitors. Anyone have an opinion on that? There was a VS 260 pair with matching center that had bidding start on eBay at $880 and the lot received no bids after a couple of runs through. The seller wanted $1150 on buy it now and of course that appears above market.
I offered him $780 for both if he would repost on a buy it now. I guess either I wasn't being realistic or he wasn't. If you can't get a single bid at $880 and you want to sell I would think that my offer was fair. Clearly there is not a lot of supply out there. Despite all the praise they receive here it is hard for me to justify paying what no one else will for something I haven't heard and likely could not sell for anywhere near what I paid for them if they somehow disappoint. Other than power handling, I wonder what the sound difference is between the VR tweeter (E40) and the VRH.O tweeter (E60) in the Boston Acoustics E series.
I own the E60's and may need some decent surrounds some day. Originally Posted by gtgray I also bought an older pair of Boston CR9s but I think there might be something wrong with one of them. Any take on which is the best matching bookshelf for that center. I have seen some praise for the CR67. The CRC7 and CR67 will work together - the CR67 is a nice budget speaker - however, somewhat lacking in definition, and can be somewhat boomy sounding in the bass. Still better than a lot of budget friendly entry level speakers - I will take them over Polk, Klipsch, Infinity and JBL and some former Paradigm and PSB speakers.
I will take the Dennis Murphy modded Pioneer speakers over the CR67. Hi AVSForum members, I have been reading this forum for a long time now and now finally joining the Home Theatre experience.:-) Tonight or tomorrow my new speakers arrive and I wanted to ask you guys for some guidelines and tips in setting them up. I am going for a 7.1 setup. The receiver is an Onkyo TX-NR616, it has flexible bass management and crossover settings can be set for each channel.
The speakers I will receive, hopefully today: Boston Acoustics A360 as Fronts Boston Acoustics A225C as Centre Boston Acoustics A26 as surrounds Boston Acoustics A26 as rear surrounds Boston Acoustics ASW650 as subwoofer How would you guys set the crossover on the receiver for the speakers and on the rear of the subwoofer? Are there any other things I need to take into concideration when setting them up?
I know THX recoomends a crossover of 80Hz however, the A360s can go a lot lower than that. Hope you guys can give me some tips, it will help me setup my home theatre faster. Thanks in advance. Welcome to the Forum.in regards to base mgmt with towers its a bit tricky and it would take trial and error depending on your room size, and your sub. You can start by crossing over your towers at 50 or 60hz and working your way up or down from there and see how it sounds to you. There's also the question of if you set your towers to large or small. When I had towers I set them to large and BASS to both my towers and my sub. Some might say that you're duplicating your efforts and may add unwanted distortion and not getting the max output out of your amp.
In MY case its what sounded best to ME, but it could be different for you. If your sub can go deep and your room size is not huge, than start with sending your bass just to your sub and cross them over at your liking. Originally Posted by royalsfan Would the M340 speakers be a big upgrade over the A360? It is for a music only system with no sub and a Yamaha RX797 receiver. The price doubles for the M series.
I do not care about appearance just sound quality. Also if anyone has compared the A360 to the Cambridge Audio S70, how do they compare? Thanks for your help.
If your looking to get new towers and are willing to spend near 1000 to achieve a new level of sound quality, hop off the Boston Acoustics train and take a look at the ARX A5's. The Boston A and M lines aren't as impressive as the older E series, or VS series they offered back a few years ago. The ARX line can give you the sound quality you were looking for without breaking your bank. I've closely compared them to my Boston E series bookshelves and I can honestly say they have surpassed them for a fraction of what Boston was selling them for new. Or you can wait for Boston to produce something amazing again.
Which may not be for a while. Not dissing Boston though, no way, Boston has brought me into the world of speakers. It's just that their lines aren't too impressive currently. Trying other companies has really opened my eyes when it comes to making expensive purchases. Don't be afraid to shop around. Still regret selling the VS260/VS325C I had. I've demo'd both the A25 and M25. The A25 is a good deal at the price for refurbs. But even then I sent them back- just don't really like the Kortec tweeter.
The M25 is noticeably better, and the SB dimple dome they use is good. But IMO the woofer is the weak link. The M25 just doesn't have near the clarity/resolution of the VS260 - not even close IMO. Cabinet build quality is good though. Still, I think they should've stuck with woofers similar to those used in the VS series (I believe they were also made by SB Acoustics). I now have the Arx A1b, and while it's not built as nicely as the M25, I think it sounds better.
Particularly the midrange/low end. Hard to say how the high end compares without hearing them side by side, since I think they both do pretty well in that regard. Boston Acoustics SoundWare XS 2.1 Home Theater Speaker System I grabbed a $129 refurbished deal and for the price I am very happy with the like new condition/performance/features.
I feel I got more than what I paid for. Question - has anyone gotten the volume controls to work with AT&T U-VERSE remote? I have tried auto-program and about 40 manual codes, then I gave up. EDIT: Well duh, I had mis-read the instruction manual. I thought I had to teach my U-Verse remote how to work with the SoundWare XS. After reading it again I learned that the SoundWare XS actually can learn any infrared controller!
The programming was easy and works great! It took me a while to get back to you guys. But that is because the delivery of my speakers took a lot longer then the store initially promised. To date I am still waiting for the A26's to arrive. So far I am really happy with the Boston Acoustics A series speakers. See below my current setup LG 55LM760S Onkyo TX-NR616 (Audyssey 2EQ setup) Boston Acoustics A360 as Fronts - Audyssey x-over = 40 Hz - I have set it to 60 Hz Boston Acoustics A225C as Center - Audyssey x-over = 40 Hz - I have set it to 100 Hz Boston Acoustics A26 as surrounds - are still to be delivered Boston Acoustics A26 as rear surrounds - are still to be delivered Boston Acoustics ASW650 as sub-woofer - the supplier could not deliver this sub-woofer anymore, I therefore decided to take it a step up and went for a SVS SB12-NSD subwoofer. I am really happy with the precision and bass from this sub-woofer.
So far I am enjoying my new setup. I do notice the speakers need to be played in but every day the sound improves.
Also I am surprised how good the sound from the center integrates with the fronts.
